Identification Denied 2008
Project description
Hair plays a crucial role in determining and maintaining identity constructs all over the world, be it religious, social or political. In this piece, I have created an 'identity document' within the pages of an expired passport which exposes the relationship between hair and identity, examining that in essence it is in a decontextualised state that hair is most honest with us (DNA is the most trusted of identity determinations). The work alludes to various identity manifestations shaped by differing types and styles of hair both on or off a head. Often stereotypically, hair represents: femininity, homosexuality, marginalised peoples, prisoners etc.
What happens once the hair is out of its social/poltical context? How can so much meaning so quickly dissipate?
