Project description

Professional Voyeur Part Two explores ideas surrounding marginalisation and perception. Enthralled by the power of sound to transform (both physical and emotional) space, I made this work as an immersive 5.1 surround sound environment which uses visual aid (3 channel projection) as a secondary medium to contradict and/or reaffirm common ways of seeing, feeling and interacting with the world.

Here, the viewer enters a sound space framed by a wall of doors, each door has a peephole embedded in it at hip height. Encouraged to interact with the space, the viewer bends down to look into the world behind the door. Static frame video panoramas play out behind each door so that as you move through the space and look through each door you experience a slightly different perspective of the same world. Four environments are explored, a suburban street corner, an intimate bed/loungeroom space, an industrial port/shipping scape, and a cityscape. The surround sound being heard in the standing space takes the viewer away from and then into the visual space they are looking into. The reading of these environments may shift when viewed in conjunction with an unlikely and ever-changing sound-scape. The idea here is to highlight the power of the AudioVisual medium when working in contrary as opposed to synchronised motion. The sound and image components of this work are out of sync so that where they match up is always changing - maintaining an element of suprise and randomness for each new viewer. Bombs may start exploding all around you while you're lying naked on your lounge. Become a Professional Voyeur.
